The Process Of Alloy Wheel Refurbishment

Refinishing alloy wheels is one of the most popular methods to make your wheels look brand new. This is the cheapest way to make sure your wheels don't look dated or reduce the car's quality.

Most alloy wheels have a painted finish. However, scratches and scuffs from road wear can cause them to look very bad. After the wheels are taken off the car, remove the paint and inspect them to determine if there are any gouges or cracks that need to be filled. These may need to be filled. Spot putty can be used to fill in the smaller scratches.

You may need to fill large gouges by looking for a welding shop that does such work. You should not expect to be able to weld, as most people don't know how. After all gouges and scratches have been removed, the wheels need to be sanded again.

It is a slow process as the surfaces may need to be sanded several times with different gritsandpapers to ensure a consistent surface. Also, this must be done in warm weather and in the sun. It is not recommended to allow the putty dry in cold or damp conditions.

After the sanding is complete and the surface smoothened, you can clean the wheel with mineral spirits. This is an important step. You must make sure that the wheels are clean. You may need to tape the wheels, depending on whether they have been removed (which it is preferable), in order to reduce the chance of spraying paint.

Spray a coat with primer once you are done. Spray the primer lightly first, then spray with the back-and-forth motion that is recommended when spraying paint. After the primer has dried, you will need to sand it with wet sandpaper. A 400 grit and then a 600 grit are the most common. Two coats of primer will be required to apply to the wheels.

Now you are ready to paint the wheels. After you have applied the first coat of paint, let it dry. It is best to let it dry overnight. Two coats of color will be required on the wheels. They must be dry completely before clear coat can be applied. This could cause the clear coat to fall off the wheels.
